| Aniridia is a congenital and hereditary disease. Although the word
aniridia literally means the absence of the iris of the eye, it is
an ocular disorder that involves various parts of the eye. Generally it is bilateral, that
is, in both eyes, and incomplete, because in the majority of the cases an incipient iris
exists but did not develop. |

|
| The iris is the colored ring of the eye which surrounds
the black pupil. It is a contractile membrane located behind the cornea and in front of
the crystalline lens that contracts or dilates, opens or closes, depending on the
intensity of the light in the environment. Its function is to regulate the amount of light
that enters the ocular globe and reaches the retina. |

The external appearance of the aniridic eye is of a large
black central pupil and in many cases a small colored band. |
